Hong Kong Maritime Museum, when i grew up, i started my exploration by following my uncle to repair the engines. law lap keung: when i was 18, i became a licensed pleasure craft master. i chose maritime studies of the hong kong polytechnic university as my major.
i worked in a shipping company after graduation. being a cadet on a sea-going vessel, i started my career in the maritime industry. when i was at sea i had been thinking about jobs on shore. and i learnt that being a marine officer in the marine department will be a good choice for me. a certificate of competency (master mariner) and a year's experience as a chief officer on a sea-going vessel are required. i joined the marine department as a marine officer after fulfilling these requirements. (managing the operations of ports and the water.job positions of varied duties) marine officers are mainly responsible for the management and supervision of the port in hong kong. there are different posts with varied job duties. including the regulation of marine traffic,
the coordination of search and rescue operations, harbor patrol, management of ferry terminals and the prosecution for violation of maritime law, etc (varied requirements.practical skills are advised.) by enrolling on the hong kong polytechnic university’s bba (hons) in international shipping and transport logistics programme, youngsters can start a maritime career. apart from acquiring nautical knowledge, they will learn about various aspects of the shipping business namely maritime law, marine insurance, accounting, management, etc. the 3-year higher diploma course in maritime studies run by the maritime services training institute of the vocational training council also offers opportunities for candidates who aspire to pursue a maritime career.
it covers operating practices on board,professional knowledge and practical training necessary for running a maritime business. after graduation, youngsters can join shipping companies as cadets first. encouraging youngsters to join the maritime industry, the sar government has launched the “sea-going training incentive schemeâ€. under which cadets receive incentive payments during the cadetship up to 24 months until they obtain the class 3 certificate of competency (deck officer). upon completion of cadetship and obtaining the certificate, they may be promoted to third officer and then second officer andfinally to the chief officer and master of sea-going ships. (change the way of thinking and attitude.embrace comprehensive consideration.) after joining the maritime department, my attitude and way of thinking has changed a lot.
i only thought of the operation and safety of my own vessel in the past. now i have to solve problems by fully considering every aspect of it and by balancing the interests of all port users. although my role in the maritime industry has changed, my seafaring experience in learning the operation of different ports and shipboard operations help my job as a marine officer. the job widens my horizons by allowing me to explore different aspects of the maritime industry. marine officers at different ranks may also represent hong kong at various international maritime meetings to exchange ideas and share our experience with the maritime officials from all over the world. (a promising career - the marine officer grade )
marine officer is the entry rank for the grade. by merit of experience and performance, a marine officer could be promoted to senior marine officer, principal marine officer, assistant director, deputy director and even director of marine, the head of the department. (well-paid with challenges.youngsters are advised to join maritime industry.) youngsters have to get themselves mentally prepared. with the necessary work experience and professional qualifications, they can join the marine department as a marine officer, taking part in managing the world-class hub port of hong kong. it is a promising and challenging job with attractive pay package.
